Carmen Ung, a senior at Rosemead High School and a student worker at El Monte-Rosemead Adult School (EMRAS), has been awarded a prestigious $50,000 scholarship from Southern California Edison. As announced this week, the scholarship is a significant boost for Ung, who plans to begin her studies at Yale University this fall.

The scholarship, funded by Southern California Edison, is designed to support high-achieving students from the utility’s service area who plan to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields. Carmen’s exemplary performance at Rosemead High and her active involvement with EMRAS made her a standout candidate for this competitive award.

Achievements by local students like Carmen uplift the community and highlight the effectiveness of our educational institutions in fostering future leaders. This scholarship not only aids Carmen financially as she transitions to one of the nation’s top universities but also serves as an inspiration to her peers across El Monte, South El Monte, Baldwin Park, Rosemead, and Irwindale.

Annually, Southern California Edison awards scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $40,000 to deserving students across Southern California. Carmen’s $50,000 scholarship is one of the highest individual awards given, underlining her outstanding qualifications and potential in her field of study.

As Carmen prepares for her move to Yale, she plans to major in Environmental Science, inspired by her desire to address pressing global environmental issues. Her journey from Rosemead to Yale will surely motivate current and future students at Rosemead High School.

For students interested in applying for next year’s scholarship, information sessions will be held at EMRAS starting in September. These sessions aim to guide students through the application process and offer advice on how to strengthen their submissions.

Carmen’s achievements herald a promising future not only for herself but for the communities of El Monte, South El Monte, Baldwin Park, Rosemead, and Irwindale, as they continue to support and celebrate the accomplishments of their young residents.
