In a significant community initiative in El Monte, the local police department, Assembly Member Mike Fong, and the El Monte Business Alliance came together to distribute 450 turkeys to families in need, marking the approach of Thanksgiving. This gesture aimed to bring some holiday cheer and support to those facing hardships during festive times.
On the bright Saturday morning of November 23, 2024, the giveaway event took place, reflecting a strong community spirit. The El Monte Police Department took the lead by contributing the largest share of the turkeys, totaling 300. Assembly Member Mike Fong showed his support by donating 100 turkeys, while the El Monte Business Alliance added another 50 to the cause. This collaborative effort underscores a shared commitment to community welfare among El Monte’s civic and business leaders.
“Moments like this remind us of the power of community,” El Monte Police Chief Jake Fisher said in a statement. “Seeing so many people come together—from officers to students to local leaders—to brighten the holiday for our neighbors is truly inspiring.”
To ensure the donations reached families most in need, the El Monte High School District, Mountain View School District, and El Monte City School District played key roles. They assisted in selecting recipient families, ensuring that the effort was finely targeted to benefit those who would appreciate it the most during the holiday season.
Furthermore, Assembly Member Mike Fong took the opportunity to honor local non-profit organizations that have been instrumental in fighting food insecurity within the San Gabriel Valley. Six organizations were recognized for their dedicated services, receiving financial contributions to aid their ongoing missions. The Wealth by Health Foundation, Our Saviour Center, Foothill Unity Center, American Legion Post 397, MERCI Housing, and MARYVALE were each acknowledged for their hard work and commitment to the community.
Each of these organizations received donations to support their operations, with $500 going to the first four and an increased amount of $750 to MERCI Housing and MARYVALE, reflecting perhaps their exceptional need or impact. These funds will help these groups continue their essential work, ranging from providing direct assistance to organizing broader community support initiatives.
This event not only highlights the cooperative spirit among different sectors in El Monte but also shines a light on the behind-the-scenes efforts to tackle significant social issues such as food insecurity. It is a reminder of the power of community solidarity and the impact of collective efforts in addressing and mitigating the challenges faced by many, especially during significant times like the holidays. The initiative is a testament to the community’s resolve to not only celebrate together but also support each other in times of need.
“Being able to provide meals for families in need is a profound reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together with generosity and compassion,” City Manager Alma Martinez said in a statement. “This event is a testament to the heart of El Monte, and I am so grateful to everyone who played a part in bringing hope and joy to our neighbors this Thanksgiving.”
