The El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD), founded in 1901, is a cornerstone of public education in the San Gabriel Valley. With six high schools and one of the state’s most robust adult education programs, the El Monte Union schools provide comprehensive learning opportunities to over 19,000 students across its campuses.
Serving Youth and Adult Learners
EMUHSD operates Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte, and Fernando R. Ledesma High School, as well as the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School. The district serves approximately 8,000 students in grades 9 through 12, and another 11,000 in adult education. Together, these programs meet the evolving needs of a diverse community through college preparatory courses, career technical education, and lifelong learning opportunities.
The district employs 1,248 staff members—623 certificated and 625 classified—who support its academic mission. Instruction and support services are designed to foster success among students from a wide range of backgrounds and economic circumstances.
A Community-Focused District
The El Monte Union attendance area covers a population of roughly 200,000 residents, with many families engaged in industrial, manufacturing, and retail work. The district includes residential neighborhoods and business corridors connected by major freeways including the 605, Pomona (60), and San Bernardino (10). This accessibility makes EMUHSD a central educational hub in eastern Los Angeles County.
Reflecting the community it serves, the district emphasizes collaboration between schools, families, and community stakeholders. This shared responsibility is part of the district’s guiding philosophy and is central to its educational planning and outreach.
Commitment to Equity and Excellence
El Monte Union schools are committed to equal opportunity in both employment and education. As a Title IX employer, it prohibits discrimination based on any protected category. Its policies align with federal and state guidelines to create an inclusive environment for all students and staff.
The district’s Board of Trustees supports a mission rooted in continuous improvement, equity, and access. With an eye toward excellence, board members guide policies and programs designed to serve both youth and adults in an ever-changing educational landscape.
