South El Monte Aquatic Center Promotes Safety And Fun

|

SOUTH EL MONTE — The South El Monte Aquatic Center offers more than a place to cool off during the summer. It provides affordable programs that help children and adults build swimming skills, stay active and improve water safety.

As temperatures rise across the San Gabriel Valley, city officials encourage families to view swim lessons as an important life skill rather than simply a seasonal activity. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among young children in the United States, making access to quality swimming instruction especially valuable.

South El Monte’s Aquatic Center offers swimming lessons taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. The lessons give local families access to professional instruction at a fraction of the cost often charged by private swim schools. According to the city’s aquatics program, Session 5 runs Aug. 10 through Aug. 21, with registration opening Aug. 8 for afternoon classes. (City of South El Monte)

South El Monte Aquatic Center Offers Affordable Programs

Beyond swim lessons, the South El Monte Aquatic Center serves as a community gathering place with programs designed for residents of every age. Recreation Swim is available Monday through Friday from 1 to 3:15 p.m. through Aug. 21. Admission is $1.50 for adults and $1 for youth ages 17 and younger. Lap Swim for ages 14 and older is offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon for $1 per person through Aug. 21. (City of South El Monte)

Older adults can participate in free Senior Water Aerobics classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. through Aug. 28. Aqua Fitness classes for ages 16 and older are held Monday and Wednesday evenings through Aug. 26, giving residents another option for low-impact exercise. (City of South El Monte)

Community aquatic centers have become more than neighborhood pools. They now support recreation, fitness, education and public health while creating spaces where neighbors can gather close to home.

Affordable access also makes a meaningful difference for many South El Monte families. With admission costing little more than a dollar, residents can enjoy healthy recreational activities without the expense of traveling to water parks or private clubs. The low-cost programs help remove financial barriers while giving children opportunities to develop confidence around water and adults a convenient place to exercise.

Swimming Provides Benefits Beyond Summer

Swimming offers benefits that continue long after summer ends. It provides a low-impact, full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility. For older adults, water exercise can improve balance and mobility while placing less stress on joints.

As summer begins to wind down, city officials encourage families to take advantage of the remaining aquatic programs, especially swim lessons that can help children become safer and more confident around water.

The South El Monte Aquatic Center is located at 1500 Central Ave. Residents can learn more about swimming lessons, recreation swim and other aquatic programs by visiting the City of South El Monte Aquatics page or the Parks and Recreation registration portal.
