With the roar of student-athletes and the rhythm of the marching band, El Monte High School marked the official opening of its new athletics facility on June 2. The celebration showcased the school’s pride and spirit, with performances from cheerleaders, color guard, and band members energizing the event.

The newly completed facility, equipped with a synthetic track and field, modern scoreboard, and upgraded amenities, represents a major investment in student development and community engagement. The project was funded through voter-approved Measure D and Measure HS bonds and is part of El Monte Union High School District’s $190 million modernization effort.

Facility Launches with Student Showcases

The celebration opened with a flag salute led by Associated Student Body (ASB) president Destynee Nora and a live rendition of the national anthem by senior Alexander Gonzalez. Emcee John P. Kovac, known as the “voice of the Lions,” hosted the event. Student-athletes from football, soccer, and track programs took the field to demonstrate the facility’s capabilities. They scored the first goals and touchdowns and ran the inaugural relay on the new track.

ASB vice president and track athlete Hayden Nguyen reflected on the occasion, calling it a moment of pride for the student body. “As a track athlete myself, I’ve had wins with humility and losses with grace. This field has shown me how much I’ve grown and persevered,” Nguyen said. “What an amazing day to celebrate this new chapter.”

Principal Eddie Cuevas addressed the crowd with words of reflection and hope. “This facility is more than just turf and track – it’s a launchpad for our students to grow as athletes, leaders, teammates, and individuals,” Cuevas said. “A place where dedication meets opportunity and the roar of Lion pride will echo for years to come.”

District Celebrates Progress and Community Impact

El Monte Union High School District Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga, an El Monte High alumnus and former football player, returned to his alma mater to speak at the event. “El Monte High holds a special place in my heart. As a student, athlete, and former staff member, I’ve witnessed how far this field has come,” Zuniga said. “What was once a well-worn space is now a premier facility that reflects our commitment to student growth in body, mind, and spirit by creating spaces that inspire excellence.”

The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and formal recognition of those involved in the project, including district leaders, project partners, and community members. Guests then gathered for a community taco dinner, rounding out a day of celebration that connected past, present, and future generations of Lions.

A Legacy for Future Generations

The new facility is expected to serve more than just athletics programs. It will provide space for physical education, community events, and school-wide celebrations. As the school prepares for the graduation of the Class of 2025, the timing of the opening adds a layer of significance for students who have witnessed the transformation of their campus.

The El Monte High athletics facility stands as a lasting symbol of community investment and school pride—one that will benefit students for years to come.
