Los Angeles County has officially declared April 10 “Dolores Huerta Day” to celebrate the 95th birthday of Dolores Huerta, a pioneering figure in labor and civil rights activism. The announcement by Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and Supervisor, Hilda L. Solis, recognizes Huerta’s lifelong contributions to social justice and workers’ rights.

“Dolores Huerta’s contributions to Los Angeles County and to Latinos across the country have inspired generations of leaders fighting for justice for all,” said Chair Pro Tem Solis. “On this Dolores Huerta Day, may her legacy continue to light a fire in us all.”

Dolores Huerta’s roots in the social justice movements are deep and far-reaching. Co-founding the United Farm Workers (UFW) with César Chávez, Huerta was instrumental in the historic 1965 Delano grape strike, which dramatically changed the landscape of labor rights in agriculture. Her role in advocating for the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act of 1975, which allows farmworkers to create unions and secure better working conditions, underscores her pivotal influence in labor reform.

Her slogan, “Sí, Se Puede” — translated as “Yes, We Can” — has transcended its original context to inspire broader movements, emphasizing her impact not just locally but globally. Huerta’s continued dedication through the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which promotes community activism for social justice, offers a living legacy of her commitment to civil rights.

For residents of El Monte, South El Monte, Baldwin Park, Rosemead, and Irwindale, Dolores Huerta represents more than historical achievement. She embodies the ongoing struggle for equity and justice, issues that resonate deeply in these communities. Local leaders and activists see Dolores Huerta Day not only as a celebration but as a renewal of civic commitment to these principles.

“I’m honored to receive this recognition from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who work tirelessly to make Los Angeles County a vibrant home for all,” said Dolores Huerta, Founder & President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and Co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America.

As Los Angeles County commemorates Dolores Huerta Day, schools and community centers are encouraged to engage in educational events and discussions about Huerta’s contributions and the broader implications for current social justice movements. Local officials hope that this day serves as an annual reminder of the power of community action and the importance of continuing the fight for workers’ rights and gender equality.

In addition, community members are planning a series of events and workshops around the date, focusing on labor rights, women’s empowerment, and activism, thus further cementing the ideals Huerta has championed throughout her life.

Dolores Huerta Day is set to be not only a reflection of the past achievements but also a forward-looking catalyst for community-driven change, embodying Huerta’s lifelong message: “Sí, Se Puede.”
