SAN GABRIEL VALLEY — San Gabriel Valley spending enters the back-to-school season as consumers remain active despite a July pullback in national retail sales. The latest federal data suggest shoppers are still spending, but local businesses may face customers who are more selective about value.

U.S. retail and food service sales totaled $763.6 billion in July, down 0.6% from June, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Sales remained 5% above July 2025 levels. Sales from May through July were 6.3% higher than the same period last year.

The July decline followed stronger activity earlier in the summer. May sales rose 0.9% from April, while June sales increased 0.2% from May.

Consumers Remain Active Despite Pullback

The monthly decline varied across retail categories. Sales excluding gasoline stations fell 0.6% in July. Nonstore retailers, a category that includes online merchants, posted a 2.2% monthly decline. Still, nonstore sales were 7.7% above July 2025.

Food services and drinking places moved in the opposite direction. Sales increased 0.5% from June and 5% from a year earlier.

Those figures show why a single month may not capture the full consumer picture. The Census Bureau reported that total sales remained higher than last year despite July’s decline.

For businesses in El Monte, South El Monte, Baldwin Park, Rosemead, Irwindale and nearby communities, consumers’ continued activity could provide opportunities heading into fall.

San Gabriel Valley Spending Creates Competition

San Gabriel Valley spending could become increasingly important for neighborhood restaurants, markets, salons and specialty retailers as households decide where their dollars go.

Independent businesses can compete through service, convenience, pricing and relationships with customers. A restaurant can adjust specials based on demand. A retailer can respond to requests for specific merchandise. Service businesses can adapt schedules or offerings as customer needs change.

The July figures also show that online retailers do not capture every new consumer dollar. The monthly decline in nonstore sales does not establish a long-term shift, but it leaves room for brick-and-mortar businesses to compete for shoppers.

The Census Bureau cautions that its advance estimates come from a sample and remain subject to revision. Readers can review the agency’s Monthly Retail Trade data and economic indicators for updated reports.

Back-To-School Season Brings New Demand

Families are now entering another major purchasing period. Back-to-school needs can generate demand for clothing, supplies, meals, haircuts and other services.

Fall activities and the approaching holiday season will bring more chances for local businesses to attract customers. July’s report suggests those customers have not disappeared.

For San Gabriel Valley businesses, the challenge is earning their share of household budgets. Clear value and responsive service can help local merchants compete as consumers decide where to spend through the final months of 2026.
