EL MONTE — Young children can practice classroom routines and early learning skills before entering pre-kindergarten through a city recreation program. El Monte Tiny Tots begins its fall session Aug. 24 at Lambert Park, offering an eight-week introduction to a structured classroom environment.
The City of El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department offers the program for children who are 3 years old by the first week of class.
Classes run Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The fall session continues through Oct. 15.
The full eight-week program costs $190.
El Monte Tiny Tots Builds Classroom Skills
Tiny Tots introduces children to activities and routines they may encounter as they move toward a pre-kindergarten classroom.
Daily activities help participants recognize letters, sounds and numbers, according to the city. Children also practice writing their first names and sitting quietly while listening during story time.
The program includes hands-on activities designed to develop fine and gross motor skills. Fine motor activities can involve movements children use for tasks such as writing. Gross motor skills involve larger movements and physical activity.
The city also emphasizes developing children’s self-esteem and confidence as part of the program.
Classes take place at Lambert Park, 11431 McGirk Ave. The regular schedule runs four days each week, but the city will not hold class Sept. 7 in observance of Labor Day.
Parents should also expect to have classroom responsibilities. The city’s registration information notes the requirement but does not provide further details about what those responsibilities involve.
Registration Includes Age And Participation Requirements
Families must meet several requirements before enrolling a child.
Participants must be 3 years old by the first week of class. Parents must provide a birth certificate to verify their child’s age. Children must also be toilet trained before participating.
Registration is limited, and the city does not offer refunds or transfers for the program.
Families can register through El Monte’s online Parks and Recreation registration system. The city’s Tiny Tots promotional materials also include a QR code that directs families to registration information.
The fall program comes as families across El Monte prepare for another school year. For children who have not spent much time in a classroom setting, the session offers regular opportunities to practice listening, following routines and participating with other children.
El Monte Tiny Tots also combines those routines with early academic and physical activities during each class.
