Emma W. Shuey Elementary School has been named a 2025 California Distinguished School by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. The Rosemead campus was recognized for its academic growth and success in closing the achievement gap, according to data from the 2024 California School Dashboard.

Academic Growth and Equity Highlighted

Located at 8472 East Wells Street, Shuey Elementary serves roughly 460 students from preschool through sixth grade. The school’s recognition is based on both academic performance and a positive school climate, core components of the California Distinguished Schools Program.

“This honor reflects the unwavering commitment of our teachers, staff, students, and families to academic excellence and a positive learning environment,” said Rosemead School District Board President Diane Benitez.

Principal of the Rosemead distinguished school Dr. Debra Boeve-Letcher echoed the sentiment, attributing the recognition to the school’s collaborative culture. “Our collective commitment to narrowing the achievement gap and promoting equity has been pivotal in achieving this distinction,” Boeve-Letcher said.

District Commends Community Commitment

The honor underscores the district’s focus on inclusive and high-quality education. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Philip D’Agostino said the award “affirms the work being done to promote academic achievement, close achievement gaps, and engage students.”

Shuey Elementary, originally opened in 1953 as Wells Street School, was renamed to honor its first principal, Emma W. Shuey. Today, it incorporates programs such as “Leader in Me” and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to foster leadership and reinforce personal responsibility. The campus also offers the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program, providing structured care before and after regular school hours.
