The City of Baldwin Park is gearing up for a significant step in enhancing local green spaces with a groundbreaking ceremony for the final phase of construction on Phase I of the Baldwin Park Greenway. The event is scheduled for Thursday, April 3, at 11 a.m. at Walnut Creek Nature Park, located at 701 N. Frazier Ave. Community members are invited to attend, with light refreshments and food available.

The ceremony symbolizes a pivotal advancement in Baldwin Park’s commitment to sustainable development and outdoor recreation. The Baldwin Park Greenway, eagerly awaited by the community, promises to be a cornerstone for environmental and recreational benefits in the area.

Phase I of the Baldwin Park Greenway introduces a 2.5-mile protected pathway stretching along the scenic San Gabriel River, from Ramona Boulevard to Walnut Creek Nature Park. This path prioritizes safety and accessibility, offering a car-free, ADA-compliant route that accommodates walkers, runners, and cyclists.

Enhancements in this final stage of construction include the incorporation of drought-tolerant native landscaping and a variety of amenities aimed at enhancing the user experience. Planned features include water fountains, benches, extensive lighting, bicycle repair stations, and picnic areas, ensuring a pleasant and practical outdoor space for all.

Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila shared her enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This project is a true reflection of our commitment to expanding green spaces and providing safe, accessible transportation options for our residents.” She emphasized the role of the Greenway in connecting important destinations while preserving natural landscapes.

Looking forward, construction on this segment of the Greenway is anticipated to wrap up by June 2025. Additionally, there are plans to extend the Greenway further, with a proposed 2.8-mile extension leading to Hilda L. Solis Park. This would create a comprehensive network, expanding the Greenway to approximately five miles of connected pathways aimed at enhancing pedestrian and cyclist accessibility citywide.

This project, integral to Baldwin Park’s vision of improved pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, has been supported by various funding sources. These include the California Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program, L.A. County Proposition C, the California Transportation Development Act, a 2009 grant from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the California Natural Resources Agency, and the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy.

Residents and local stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the groundbreaking event to learn more about the benefits of the Greenway and to celebrate this milestone in community-enhancing infrastructure.
