Youth Shine at LACoFD Community Events

The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) has been active in South El Monte this fall, hosting and supporting programs aimed at inspiring future firefighters and strengthening community ties. Two separate events—the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) Firefighter Career Expo and the upcoming Girls’ Fire Camp—highlight the department’s ongoing outreach.

Career Expo Draws Hundreds of Future Firefighters

On Saturday, September 6, the LACoFD Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Examination Section joined the Cal-JAC Firefighter Career Expo in South El Monte. The event, held at the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC), welcomed more than 1,500 attendees, including 728 prospective firefighter candidates.

Participants had the opportunity to meet with fire department recruiters, test their skills on the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and learn what to expect on the entry-level firefighter written exam. They also received information about the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List, which helps connect candidates to hiring fire agencies across California.

In addition to testing and recruitment, fire departments displayed emergency apparatus and answered questions about the diverse career pathways available in the fire service. Younger visitors had the chance to participate in a scaled-down version of the physical ability test designed specifically for children and teens.

The International Association of Firefighters, Local 1014, sponsored lunch for all guests, contributing to the welcoming and educational atmosphere. The event was widely regarded as a success, providing both resources and encouragement for individuals pursuing a firefighting career.

Girls’ Fire Camp Returns in October

Looking ahead, LACoFD will host its 12th Semiannual Girls’ Fire Camp on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The free event will be held in partnership with the Women’s Fire League and is open to participants ages 9 to 17.

Girls’ Fire Camp introduces youth to the firefighting profession through hands-on activities and mentorship. Attendees will take part in equipment demonstrations, practice firefighting skills, engage in team-building exercises, and join Q&A sessions with LACoFD team members. The program is designed to build confidence and awareness while providing a safe, supportive environment for learning.

Registration opens September 6, and space is limited for both participants and spectators. Interested families may register online at bit.ly/FALLGFC.
