Town Hall Addresses Youth Substance Use

by | Nov 2, 2025 | South El Monte

Youth substance use prevention took center stage in South El Monte on October 29 as parents, educators, and local leaders gathered to discuss strategies for protecting teens and strengthening family communication. The town hall, held at the South El Monte Senior Center, was part of a regional effort to raise awareness about the growing risks of substance use among adolescents across the San Gabriel Valley.

Organized by The Wellness Center at the Historic General Hospital in partnership with CultivaLA and the El Monte Union High School District, the “Substance Use and Kids: What Every Parent/Caretaker Needs to Know” event offered practical tools and education to families. Participants learned how to identify early warning signs of substance misuse and how open conversations at home can prevent experimentation and long-term dependence.

Youth Substance Use Prevention and Community Awareness

The town hall underscored the importance of youth substance use prevention as a shared responsibility among families, schools, and community organizations. Research presented during the session showed that early intervention—combined with parental engagement—significantly reduces the likelihood of teens developing substance-related problems.

Attendees also received guidance on maintaining supportive relationships and creating safe spaces for youth to discuss social pressures and stress. The event offered translation services, refreshments, and free produce bags as part of an ongoing effort to connect health and wellness education with community support.

Local Collaboration Strengthens Prevention Efforts

The Wellness Center and CultivaLA emphasized a collaborative approach to youth substance use prevention that includes partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and local agencies. The El Monte Union High School District continues to integrate substance education into its health and wellness programs, with counselors and staff trained to recognize and address behavioral risk factors early.

Across the San Gabriel Valley, organizations are expanding after-school programs, counseling services, and parent workshops that address mental health and substance awareness together. These initiatives are aimed at giving families consistent access to information, resources, and prevention strategies.

Continued Focus on Safety and Education

Substance use among youth remains a growing concern in local communities, where accessibility to vaping products, alcohol, and prescription drugs has increased. Events like the South El Monte town hall serve as an important reminder of the value of early education and family involvement in preventing future substance misuse.

Ongoing outreach by The Wellness Center and CultivaLA will continue to promote youth substance use prevention throughout Los Angeles County. Future workshops will focus on equipping parents with communication tools, helping teens build resilience, and connecting families to mental health support.

The success of this event reflects the San Gabriel Valley’s commitment to public health and youth safety. By uniting schools, families, and community partners, El Monte and South El Monte are building stronger networks to keep young people healthy and informed.
