With students across the El Monte Union High School District (EMUHSD) soon reaching voting age and the midterm elections around the corner, the District is making voter registration and civic engagement a priority by participating in the California Department of Education’s High School Voter Education Weeks, April 14-25. Following the Board of Trustees’ approval of a resolution on April 2, the District has officially designated the last two full weeks of April and September as “EMUHSD High School Voter Education Weeks.” All six campuses are holding lessons and activities that emphasize the importance of civic engagement and encourage students to utilize their right to vote.

Throughout the weeks, students are participating in a variety of creative efforts to boost awareness and engagement. Activities include classroom discussions, themed posters, social media campaigns, announcements, and lunchtime tabling that highlight the significance of voting in making voices heard. At some campuses, interactive displays such as voter registration thermometers and handwritten messages posted on classroom windows further encourage students to take part.

Associated Student Body (ASB) groups have led many of the efforts, promoting voter registration and civic responsibility among their peers. In some cases, digital media students have contributed by producing videos to help spread the message campus-wide.

“El Monte Union is proud to support our students in becoming informed, engaged citizens,” Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga said. “By fostering a culture of civic participation, we are empowering students to take an active role in their communities now and in the future.”
