South El Monte Tree Lighting Event Returns

South El Monte will launch its holiday season with the annual South El Monte tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 1. The city will host the free community event on the front lawn of City Hall at 1415 Santa Anita Ave. The gathering starts at 6 p.m. and features the lighting of a 35 foot Christmas tree.

Season kickoff on the civic lawn

The South El Monte tree celebration remains one of the city’s most attended seasonal events. Families gather on the lawn each year for music, food and holiday activities. City staff said the ceremony offers a space for residents to meet neighbors and begin the December season with a shared tradition. Crews have spent the past month preparing the tree, lighting strands and stage area for the evening program.

Live performances will open the event. City officials said the lineup includes youth groups and local musicians. Past ceremonies drew large crowds along the City Hall walkway and the adjacent lawn. Staff expect a similar turnout this year. The city advises guests to arrive early for seating and parking near the civic center.

Santa Claus visit and family activities

Santa Claus will arrive shortly before the South El Monte tree lighting. Children can take photos with Santa near the main stage. The Community Services Department will lead craft stations for younger guests. Volunteers will help children create small ornaments and greeting cards.

The city will offer free tamales and champurrado while supplies last. The warm drinks and food have become a central part of the night. Longtime attendees often line up early for the treats. Staff said they expanded the serving area to help visitors move through the line more quickly.

Community focus at year’s end

City leaders said the South El Monte tree event reflects a long local commitment to public gatherings. The ceremony gives residents a break from holiday stress and invites them to connect with others. Many families return each year and bring new neighbors to the event. The city plans to post event updates on its parks and recreation page at https://www.soelmonte.org.

Council members will join Santa onstage for the official countdown. Once lit, the tree will remain on display through early January. Families often visit during the week to take photos beside the decorations. City staff will monitor the site each night and keep walkways clear for guests.

The city encourages residents to bring jackets and blankets. Evening temperatures can drop on the civic lawn. Guests may also bring small chairs for the performance area. Parking is available near City Hall and nearby side streets.
