SOUTH EL MONTE — City of South El Monte Senior Prom festivities brought more than 200 people together Sept. 24 for music, dancing and Hollywood glamour. The annual celebration also highlighted a Senior Center that connects older residents with meals, transportation, activities and social services year-round.
The city’s Senior Services Division hosted the Hollywood-themed event at the South El Monte Senior Center. Guests enjoyed a meal, photo booth and live music from SOTO Band.
Concesa and Jesus Legaspi received the titles of prom queen and king, according to the city.
South El Monte Senior Prom Celebrates Community
The South El Monte Senior Prom is one of several special events organized for older residents. Throughout the year, the Senior Services Division provides programs designed to support residents 55 and older.
Those services include educational classes, health and wellness activities, excursions and volunteer opportunities. The city also operates a nutrition program that gives participants a place to share meals and socialize.
The lunch program connects residents with other available services, including transportation, health screenings and recreation. Clubs and other activities give participants more opportunities to meet people with similar interests.
Information about programs and eligibility is available through the city’s Senior Services Division.
Social Activities Support Older Residents
Community activities can serve an important role as people age. The National Institute on Aging reports that social isolation and loneliness can affect the physical and mental health of older adults.
The agency also identifies participation in enjoyable activities as one way older adults can stay engaged. Classes, hobbies and volunteer opportunities can provide regular social contact.
That research addresses social connection broadly and does not measure the effects of South El Monte’s prom or Senior Center programs.
Transportation can also determine whether older residents can participate in community activities. South El Monte offers Dial-A-Ride, a curb-to-curb transportation program for residents 60 and older and residents with disabilities.
The city also works with the Human Services Association to provide care management services at the Senior Center.
Residents can find transportation eligibility and service information through the city’s Dial-A-Ride program.
Senior Center Provides Year-Round Services
Beyond special events, the Senior Center provides a regular gathering place where residents can participate in activities, seek services and spend time with others.
The Hollywood-themed prom put that role on display as more than 200 participants gathered for an evening centered on celebration and community.
South El Monte’s Senior Center is at 1556 Central Ave. Residents can call 626-448-0131 for information about membership, activities and available programs.
For older residents and their families, the center provides a local connection to practical assistance and social activities throughout the year. Events such as the annual prom offer another opportunity for seniors to remain active in the community and celebrate alongside their neighbors.
