South El Monte High School’s Academic Decathlon team earned fifth place at the 44th Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon, bringing home 39 individual medals and several top honors.
The strong finish advances the South El Monte Decathlon Team to the California Academic Decathlon State Championship later this year. The competition ranks among the nation’s most demanding scholastic contests and draws dozens of high schools from across Los Angeles County each year.
Academic Decathlon challenges students through a rigorous series of tests, speeches and interviews built around a single annual theme. Teams include nine students divided into honors, scholastic and varsity divisions based on grade point average.
This structure allows students with different academic strengths to contribute to the overall team score. Participants compete in ten subjects including art, economics, essay, interview, language and literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech. The event concludes with the Super Quiz, a fast paced relay that tests knowledge before a live audience.
The Los Angeles County Office of Education organizes the annual competition and hosts one of the largest regional Academic Decathlons in California. Students often spend months studying curriculum materials while preparing essays, speeches and interviews.
Team Earns Medals And Individual Honors
South El Monte High School students earned 39 individual medals across multiple academic subjects. Several competitors received Top Decathlete recognition, awarded to the highest scoring participants within each GPA division.
The team also celebrated a four year recognition award honoring students who competed in Academic Decathlon throughout high school. One student earned a Top Decathlete Scholarship for outstanding performance across multiple events.
School leaders praised the team’s discipline and preparation, noting that Academic Decathlon demands months of study beyond regular coursework. For many students, the program strengthens research ability, public speaking skills and confidence in competitive academic settings.
With the county competition complete, the South El Monte Decathlon Team now prepares for the California Academic Decathlon State Championship. Top teams from across the state will compete for a chance to advance to the national finals.
South El Monte High School’s result places the program among California’s leading scholastic teams and highlights strong academic commitment in the community.
State Championship Preparation Underway
Coaches say preparation will intensify as the team studies the annual theme materials and practices interview and speech events. Academic Decathlon rewards consistent knowledge across disciplines, so students review art, music, science and literature topics together.
The Super Quiz relay will again close the event, giving teams a chance to demonstrate depth of preparation.
The Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon, organized by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, remains one of the state’s largest academic contests. Information about the program is available at https://www.lacoe.edu.
