ROSEMEAD — Residents gathered at Rosemead Park on Friday, Aug. 14, to mark more than six decades of cityhood. The Rosemead 67th anniversary celebration combined music and family activities with recognition of a community whose history stretches well beyond incorporation.
The free event featured live music by Latin Soul Band, arts and crafts, games, activities and giveaways. Families brought lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the summer evening with neighbors.
Rosemead officially incorporated Aug. 4, 1959. Yet the community’s roots reach into the agricultural history of the San Gabriel Valley.
Rosemead 67th Anniversary Celebration Reflects History
The Gabrielino/Tongva people inhabited the area before Spanish settlement and the establishment of Mission San Gabriel in 1771. Agriculture later became central to the community’s development.
Leonard J. Rose and his wife established a 600-acre ranch between present-day Rosemead Boulevard and Walnut Grove Avenue. Rose called the property Rose’s Meadow. The name later became Rosemede and eventually Rosemead, according to a City of Rosemead planning document.
Farms, orchards and ranches remained part of the area for decades. Residents grew crops and raised livestock as settlement expanded across the valley.
That rural character gradually changed as Southern California grew. New homes, streets and businesses replaced much of the farmland, particularly during the post-World War II suburban expansion.
By 1959, residents had reached another milestone when Rosemead became an incorporated city.
Cityhood Marks A Turning Point
The importance of incorporation was recognized in Congress years later.
Rep. George E. Danielson marked Rosemead’s 14th birthday in the Congressional Record in 1973. He noted that Aug. 4 marked the anniversary of the city’s incorporation and reflected on Rosemead’s rapid development.
Growth continued as Rosemead developed into the suburban community familiar to residents today.
The 2020 census counted 51,185 people in Rosemead. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population at 49,410 as of July 1, 2025. The city covers about 5.2 square miles. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts
Much of Rosemead’s agricultural landscape has disappeared, but its history remains visible through its name and community institutions.
Community Marks 67 Years Together
The Rosemead 67th anniversary celebration brought that history into the city’s summer concert season. The gathering gave longtime residents and newer families a shared opportunity to recognize Rosemead’s development.
The city highlighted “67 years of community, pride and progress” as residents gathered at the park.
Rosemead has changed considerably since its agricultural beginnings and its incorporation in 1959. Generations of residents have watched farms become neighborhoods and a small community grow into a diverse San Gabriel Valley city.
Friday’s gathering marked another chapter in that history, with neighbors celebrating the place generations of Rosemead residents have called home.
