The Río Hondo College Mock Trial Team launched its 2025–26 season with a strong showing at an intercollegiate scrimmage hosted by California State University, Northridge, earning praise for its preparation and professionalism. Competing against teams from CSUN and Moorpark College, Río Hondo secured a win in one of three rounds and demonstrated the composure and teamwork that have become hallmarks of the program.

Students Gain Real-World Courtroom Experience

The scrimmage provided students with hands-on experience simulating courtroom proceedings while sharpening their critical thinking, public speaking, and advocacy skills. Team members practiced opening statements, witness examinations, and closing arguments before a panel of judges. One student’s interaction with CSUN’s Mock Trial coaches even opened the door for a potential transfer opportunity, underscoring the program’s role in advancing students’ academic goals.

Faculty Advisor Connie Isais, who also served as a judge during parts of the competition, said the event helped the team strengthen its cohesion and refine its strategy for future tournaments.

Recognition from College Leadership

Río Hondo College leaders commended the team for its performance and dedication. President/Superintendent Teresa Dreyfuss said the students’ discipline and teamwork continue to reflect the college’s commitment to excellence, while Board of Trustees President Oscar Valladares credited the team’s success to both student effort and strong faculty mentorship.

The team’s early success builds on a series of recent achievements. Earlier this year, Río Hondo competed in the American Mock Trial Association’s Regional Tournament at Claremont McKenna College, where it earned the Spirit of AMTA Award for sportsmanship and civility — a national recognition of the team’s professionalism.

Looking Ahead to the Next Competition

The team will continue its competitive season at the Corey J. Wlodarczyk Invitational Tournament in November. Members are focused on refining their case strategies and advocacy techniques to build on their strong start.

The Mock Trial program remains one of Río Hondo College’s most active academic teams, combining legal education, teamwork, and leadership development. The college continues to support opportunities that allow students to apply classroom learning in practical, professional settings.
