In recognition of National School Lunch Hero Day, on May 1, the Mountain View School District (MVSD) commended its extraordinary food services team for their unwavering commitment to students and the children in the community. Created by the School Nutrition Association, National School Lunch Hero Day, is a way to showcase the hardworking food service staff members whose dedication and efforts make a profound impact on students.
MVSD’s hero food service staff play an essential role in the schools as they provide students with nutritious meals to ensure they are focused and ready to learn. Their important impact as essential workers, along with other District support staff members has been evident during the very challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the physical school closures began, MVSD’s heroic food services team has been working tirelessly to provide Grab & Go breakfasts and lunches to students and the community’s children. Led by Susan Delgado, Director of Food Services and Alice Albitre, Assistant Director of Food Services, over 213,298 Grab & Go meals have been distributed since the District’s school campuses closed on March 17.
Central Kitchen Managers, Anna Angel, Richard Pena and Irene Pena have been instrumental in the organization, meal prep and meal distribution of the Grab & Go program since its first day, showing tireless optimism, dedication, compassion and unwavering support every day.
“Anna, Richard and Irene have been truly amazing, working with our Food Service issues, plus training campus monitors, working with custodians and security personnel at the Grab & Go sites,” said Delgado. “And, they’ve done it all with such a can-do attitude and spirit. We could not have accomplished what with have with our Grab & Go meal distribution during the closures without their leadership.”
Joining in to thank and celebrate the hard working team on National School Lunch Hero Day was Foothill Credit Union whose representatives dropped off treats to MVSD’s Food Service heroes at the District’s three Grab & Go meal sites. Additionally, Susan Delgado presented each team member with a bottle of sparkling apple cider in celebration of School Lunch Hero Day and in appreciation of their tremendous dedication to MVSD’s students and families.
