The Mountain View School District (MVSD) proudly announces that Mrs. Elsa Guerrero, a dedicated Head Start teacher at Cogswell Head Start, has been awarded the LACOE Head Start Golden Apple Award for her outstanding contributions to early childhood education. She was one of only two staff Countywide to be formally recognized at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Board Meeting on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. She attended the meeting accompanied by her family and colleagues to receive the prestigious honor.

Guerrero has been an integral part of the Mountain View School District Head Start program since 1994 and has been a dedicated teacher for over 18 years–fostering a nurturing and dynamic learning environment for preschool students. Her expertise in supporting dual language learners, special needs students, and early childhood development has made a lasting impact on the community.

When asked, MVSD Preschool Programs administrators were highly complimentary of their newest award winning teacher. “Mrs. Guerrero exemplifies the passion and dedication we strive for in early childhood education,” shared Alma Gonzalez, Director of Child Development. Preschool Principal, Glenda Giron, chimed in that what truly made Guerrero deserving of this honor was her “unwavering commitment to her students, her ability to create a warm and inclusive learning space, as well as [Guerrero’s] mentorship to [her] fellow educators.”

As noted in the nomination documents, Guerrero’s teaching approach incorporates researched-based frameworks that support the District’s diverse learners. Her implementation of Sobrato Early Academic Literacy (SEAL) Strategies, for example, focuses on language-rich, culturally responsive instruction that is particularly supportive of English Learners. While Guerrero’s classroom is an expert example of promoting exploration and discovery in a play-based environment, she has also exceeded agency averages with high marks in providing instructional and emotional support as well as classroom organization.

Beyond her classroom, Mrs. Guerrero is known for her strong relationships with students’ families, inspiring and empowering them to take an active role in their children’s education. When asked, Guerrero’s fellow teachers were quick to point to her capacity to not only prepare students for elementary school and beyond, but also give families the confidence and tools to be better advocates for their children’s education.

“I am truly honored to receive this award,” said Mrs. Guerrero. “Teaching is my passion, and seeing my students grow, learn, and thrive is the greatest reward. I am grateful for the support of my colleagues, administrators, and the families who entrust me with their children’s early learning experiences.”

The Mountain View Head Start program is proud to celebrate Mrs. Elsa Guerrero’s achievements and her dedication to ensuring that every preschooler has a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
