Longtime El Monte Union Educator Named Principal of Arroyo High School

Longtime El Monte Union educator Gabriel Flores, an El Monte High School Class of 1992 graduate, has been selected to serve as Arroyo High School’s new principal.

Flores, who has spent his entire 22-year education career in El Monte Union, succeeds Angelita Gonzales, who retired in June.

“I cannot stress the significant role this District has played in my life, from the moment I walked onto the El Monte High School campus as a 14-year-old freshman to now serving as principal of the Arroyo campus and the next generation of proud Knights,” Flores said. “To say that El Monte Union is only a place of employment would be untrue. My El Monte Union family has shapedthe fabric of my career, allowing me to grow as a leader and an educator.”

Flores began his career at El Monte High in 1998, teaching social science. He became an assistant principal at El Monte High in 2003, overseeing student activities and student services before accepting the role of assistant principal of instruction at South El Monte High School in 2008. Flores subsequently transitioned to El Monte High in 2014, where he oversaw instruction before transferring to Arroyo High School for the 2019-20 year, serving in the same role.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to work with the amazing staff at Arroyo High School,” Flores said. “It has been a privilege to work with students, staff and teachers across our EMUHSD schools and I am proud to support our students as they achieve success. As principal, I will work diligently with our team of educators to think outside the box and provide quality instruction through unprecedented challenges.”

Flores has worked in many roles during his tenure in El Monte Union, such as serving as a coach for three sports; overseeing student government, activities and athletic programs; coordinating counseling and guidance programs, as well as health and psychological services; supervising selection and use of instructional materials; and coordinating new teacher training and evaluation.

“Gabriel Flores is an exemplary leader and educator, who has dedicated his life in service to the students of El Monte Union,” Superintendent Dr. Edward Zuniga said. “We are thrilled to have him step into a greater role of leadership and know his positive impact on Arroyo High School will continue to grow.”
