…so the other day I noticed I have a reminder on my calendar that Juneteenth is coming up soon and this year it falls on the Saturday before Father’s Day. With it also coming at the beginning of Summer I hope to get a lot of bar-b-que. Unlike Memorial Day which should never be thought of a just another “three day holiday” Juneteenth has always centered around families and food and should be another three day holiday.
For those of you who are not familiar with this holiday, Juneteenth is June 19th. On June 19, 1865 Union General Granger arrived in Galveston, Tx. and announced that the Civil War was over and finally the Emancipation Proclamation would be enforced in all of the states. General Lee had surrendered at Appomattox, Va. Two months before this but it had taken time for the news to get out and Texas was the last state to be officially notified. The Emancipation Proclamation had been passed into law on January 1, 1863 but had only been enforced in the states loyal to the Union, Lee’s surrender ended the Civil War and slavery was ended in all of the states.
Currently at least 45 states and the District of Columbia official recognize this holiday some by other names; Juneteenth Independence Day”, Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day”. There are on-going efforts to make this a National Holiday so soon we can look forward to it being a “three day holiday” (just what we need).
