The El Monte-Rosemead Adult School offers free English as a Second Language instruction to adult learners in El Monte, South El Monte, and surrounding communities. The program is structured across seven instructional levels, beginning with literacy for students who are not literate in their native language and progressing through advanced levels that focus on reading, writing, and communication skills.
Students are placed in classes based on appraisal testing results. Course levels include Beginning Literacy, Beginning Low, Beginning High, Intermediate Low, Intermediate High, Advanced Low, and Advanced High. The curriculum is designed to support vocabulary development, reading comprehension, written communication, and verbal fluency. Intermediate and advanced levels include instruction in critical thinking and problem solving.
Classes are available at multiple times throughout the week. Morning sessions run Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Afternoon sessions meet Monday through Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Evening classes are held Monday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Schedules are subject to change.
The program is available at no cost to students. ESL classes are held at school sites and community locations. A Distance Learning Program is available for students seeking citizenship preparation.
The school follows health and safety protocols from the California Department of Public Health and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The ESL program is part of the school’s adult education offerings, which aim to provide language instruction that supports daily life, employment preparation, and community participation.
