On December 9, 2024, the El Monte Police Department, in collaboration with the El Monte Police Officers Foundation, hosted its Shop with a Cop Event to celebrate the holiday season and support underprivileged children in the El Monte area. This event, designed to build and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and El Monte youth in a fun, supportive environment, brought holiday joy and a sense of community to all who participated.
“‘Shop with a Cop’ is one of the most meaningful events we host each year,” said Jake Fisher, Chief of the El Monte Police Department. “It is an opportunity for our officers to connect with the community in a special way and bring joy to families who may be struggling this holiday season. Events like these remind us of the power of kindness, compassion, and community.”
The day began at the police department, where a total of 10 children and families were greeted by officers before embarking on a police-escorted procession to a nearby Target store. There, the children shopped for gifts from their holiday wish lists with the help of a uniformed police officer, selecting presents for themselves and their families.
This event is part of the department and foundation’s ongoing effort to foster relationships with the community. Other events they hosted this year to benefit local youth and the El Monte community, included ‘Reel’ ‘em In Fishing’ Event, the ‘Stuff the Bearcat’ Holiday Toy Drive, and the Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution, to name a few.
“Events like ‘Shop with a Cop’ highlight the true spirit of our El Monte community,” said Alma Martinez, City Manager of El Monte. “This initiative brings joy to families in need and helps strengthen the bond between our residents and the dedicated officers who serve and protect them. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and compassion, and we’re proud to support such a meaningful program.”
Families with the greatest need participated in the event, and the El Monte Police Department and El Monte Police Officers Foundation worked closely with the local school district, churches, youth organizations, and social service agencies to identify those facing significant challenges.
