The third annual Mountain View Math Bee will bring students from across the El Monte Union High School District together on May 21 for a morning of friendly competition and mathematical challenge. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. on the campus of Mountain View High School and continues the growing tradition of celebrating student achievement on a day dedicated to numbers, logic, and school spirit.
Launched in 2023 by the MVHS Math Department and VISTA Academy, the Math Bee has quickly become a signature academic event within the district. While the first two competitions were held on March 14—Pi Day—the 2025 edition will take place in late May due to calendar adjustments. The purpose remains the same: to highlight the district’s top math students, encourage academic excellence, and strengthen cross-campus collaboration.
Celebrating Math Through Competition
The first Math Bee saw students from El Monte, Arroyo, South El Monte, and Mountain View High Schools compete in a series of challenging math problems. Teams earned points by solving equations and applying advanced reasoning under time pressure. The competition culminated with individual student rounds that tested quick thinking and depth of understanding.
Mountain View High School claimed the inaugural championship in 2023. Senior Aiden Ngo led the team to victory by solving the final question in a head-to-head round, securing the school-wide championship belt. First, second, and third place winners were honored with certificates, custom math pins, and gift cards. Participants also received commemorative T-shirts and celebrated with a Pi Day-themed lunch.
While full results from the 2024 competition were not widely publicized, the event maintained its festive atmosphere and academic rigor, bringing together students and staff for a shared celebration of learning. The continuity of the event reflects the district’s growing investment in academic competitions as a way to energize students and showcase talent beyond the classroom.
MVHS Hosts Third Annual Bee
This year, Mountain View High School will again host the district-wide event, welcoming teams from neighboring campuses. The competition will follow a similar format, with grade-level teams answering timed questions in multiple rounds. Scoring will reward not only accuracy but also teamwork and problem-solving under pressure.
According to past organizers, the Math Bee is more than a test of skill—it is a celebration of community. The event is streamed across the district and supported by faculty, district leaders, and local partners. The visibility and excitement it generates have helped position math as a source of pride and possibility among students.
The 2025 Mountain View Math Bee aims to build on this foundation. Students, parents, and staff are invited to attend and support their schools. As in previous years, top performers will receive awards and recognition, and all participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for math and academic effort.
Fostering Pride in Academics
Events like the Mountain View Math Bee are part of a broader push to promote academic engagement through friendly competition. For the El Monte Union High School District, that means creating spaces where students feel motivated to perform, supported by their peers, and recognized for intellectual achievement.
In a district where students often excel in athletics, the Math Bee adds balance by celebrating those who lead with their minds. And with Mountain View High School once again serving as host, the campus continues to model how schools can elevate learning through events that are both rigorous and fun.
The Mountain View Math Bee is open to district high school students and staff. Doors open at 8:30 a.m., and the first round begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21.
