Dare to Prepare Workshop Promotes Teen Driver Safety

Mountain View High School will host a free community workshop on Tuesday, October 28, aimed at helping families prepare for one of the most important milestones in a teen’s life—learning to drive.

The event, titled “Dare to Prepare,” is presented by Streets, Art, SAFE in collaboration with the Auto Club of Southern California (AAA). Open to teens ages 14 through 17 and their parents or guardians, the two-hour workshop will run from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Mountain View High campus, located at 2900 Parkway Drive in El Monte.

Hands-On Guidance for New Drivers

The Dare to Prepare program focuses on helping families understand the full process of earning a driver’s license and developing safe habits from the start. Participants will learn about the legal and practical responsibilities of driving, the parent’s role in driver education, and how to identify safe vehicles.

Organizers emphasize that the program is designed for both teens and parents to attend together. The family-centered format encourages open communication and shared responsibility, ensuring parents remain active partners in their teen’s driving education.

Part of a Statewide Safety Effort

Dare to Prepare is part of the broader Streets, Art, SAFE campaign, a California-based traffic safety initiative that combines creative outreach with practical education. Supported by the Auto Club of Southern California, the program has reached thousands of families across the region since its launch. Its mission is to reduce teen-related collisions by equipping new drivers and their families with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate today’s roadways safely.

AAA research has shown that teen drivers face higher risks of collisions within their first two years behind the wheel, often due to inexperience, distraction, and lack of parental involvement. Programs like Dare to Prepare aim to reduce those risks by addressing them before teens begin formal driver training.

Encouraging Early Preparation

Teens who attend the workshop gain insight into driving readiness, including the steps needed to apply for a learner’s permit, complete behind-the-wheel training, and meet state licensing requirements. The session also explores practical safety considerations such as setting family driving agreements, understanding insurance basics, and managing peer pressure while driving.

Parents will receive resources to help guide their teens through the learning process, along with tips for modeling safe driving behavior. By attending together, families can begin conversations about expectations and responsibilities that carry through the licensing process and beyond.

How to Participate

Registration for the Dare to Prepare workshop is free. Interested families can register by scanning the QR code on event materials or visiting safedtp.aceclub-events.com. Attendance by a parent or guardian is required for all participants.

For Mountain View High and the El Monte community, the event reinforces a shared commitment to youth safety and responsible driving. As the next generation prepares to take the wheel, programs like Dare to Prepare ensure they do so with awareness, confidence, and community support.
