Common Course Numbers Simplify College Transfers

|

SAN GABIREL VALLEY—Students attending Río Hondo and Citrus colleges can now identify comparable classes more easily under California’s new statewide system. Common Course Numbers give qualifying community college courses the same subject abbreviation, number and title across California.

The change stems from Assembly Bill 1111 and began in fall 2025 with several high-enrollment courses. A second group transitioned in fall 2026, while more courses are scheduled to change in fall 2027.

For San Gabriel Valley students taking classes at multiple colleges, the shared numbers can remove a familiar source of confusion.

Common Course Numbers Create Consistency

Statistics provides one example. Río Hondo College previously offered MATH 130, while Citrus College called its comparable course MATH 165. Both colleges now list the course as STAT C1000.

Other courses received similar changes. Río Hondo’s ENGL 201 and Citrus College’s ENGL 104 became ENGL C1001, Critical Thinking and Writing. Río Hondo’s POLS 110 and Citrus College’s POLI 103 became POLS C1000, American Government and Politics.

The letter “C” identifies courses included in California’s Common Course Numbering system.

Río Hondo explains its course changes and transition schedule on its Common Course Numbering page. Citrus College provides its own conversion information through its Common Course Numbering page.

More Courses Changed This Fall

The fall 2026 phase expanded the system into history, economics, communication, literature, art history and other subjects.

Río Hondo’s HIST 143 became HIST C1001, United States History to 1877. Citrus previously offered its corresponding course as HIST 107. Río Hondo’s HIST 144 and Citrus College’s HIST 108 now appear as HIST C1002.

Art history courses also changed. Río Hondo’s ART 105 and Citrus College’s ART 100A became ARTH C1100. ART 106 at Río Hondo and ART 100B at Citrus became ARTH C1200.

The changes can help students who take summer classes elsewhere or need a course unavailable at their primary campus.

Previous Coursework Still Counts

Students do not lose credit because a course received a new designation. Río Hondo states that courses completed before renumbering remain valid toward applicable degree and transfer requirements.

Students with education plans created before the transition should meet with a counselor to update them. Río Hondo’s Counseling Center can be reached at 562-908-3410 or visited in Student Services, Room SS 160.

Transfer students should still review university requirements. ASSIST remains California’s official source for community college articulation and transfer information, and it is incorporating the new course numbers as colleges adopt them.

For students balancing classes, work and family responsibilities, the statewide system offers a practical benefit. Finding the right class at Río Hondo, Citrus or another community college now requires less translation between catalogs.
