El Monte Union High School District is strengthening student futures through its growing career technical education programs. Designed to prepare students for college and in-demand careers, these programs provide hands-on learning, industry certifications, and pathways to higher education or immediate employment.
Multiple Pathways to Real-World Skills
Career technical education is available across all EMUHSD high schools and covers a wide range of industries including health science, digital media, engineering, and information technology. Students choose from 16 state-recognized career sectors, each offering courses that integrate academic knowledge with practical skills.
These pathways are aligned with California’s Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards. Students receive instruction that not only prepares them for standardized testing but also introduces them to current industry tools, techniques, and workplace expectations. In some courses, students can earn college credit or obtain industry-recognized certifications, giving them a competitive advantage in both the job market and higher education.
Focus on Preparation and Opportunity
The district’s CTE programs are designed to build more than just technical knowledge. Students develop critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills through project-based learning and participation in organizations such as HOSA – Future Health Professionals, and SkillsUSA.
Many programs include opportunities for internships, job shadowing, and partnerships with local employers. These experiences allow students to explore their career interests early and begin building a professional network. The goal is for every student to graduate both college-prepared and career-ready.
According to EMUHSD officials, more than 4,000 students participate in CTE programs each year. As industries evolve and workforce demands shift, the district continues to expand course offerings and strengthen ties with postsecondary institutions and employers.
Commitment to Student Success
El Monte Union is committed to providing equitable access to career technical education across all campuses. Counselors work with students to help them select CTE pathways that match their interests and career goals. Courses are scheduled to fit within the standard high school day and are open to all students.
Parents and community members are encouraged to stay involved by attending program events and supporting partnerships with local industries. These efforts ensure that programs remain relevant and connected to workforce trends.
Career technical education is more than a set of elective courses—it’s a system of support that empowers students to discover their strengths, build confidence, and transition smoothly into life beyond high school.
