A Message to the Class of 2020 and Families

Dear Class of 2020 and Senior Families,

We are in the final leg of the 2019-20 academic year, usually a joyous and celebratory time during which our seniors close the final chapter of their high school careers and look forward to the next stage of their academic and personal endeavors.

Unfortunately, as Los Angeles County Public Health Safer at Home orders continue to prohibit large public gatherings and mandate social/physical distancing for the foreseeable future to reduce the spread of COVID-19, it is clear to me that we are a ways from being able to safely gather groups of students, staff, and families.

The current order does not allow any exemptions for graduation gatherings of any type – the use of cars for drive-by events, even if it is one student at a time, for example, are considered public gatherings and therefore prohibited.

The health and safety of students, staff and families are our top priority and we must adhere to these orders. As such, we have no choice but to postpone our June 4 commencement ceremonies.

Please know that El Monte Union High School District remains committed to having traditional graduation ceremonies when it is safe to do so. After taking this new information into account and working in collaboration with student leadership, principals, and district administration, I want to share plans for El Monte Union High School’s Class of 2020’s graduations:

• We will postpone all traditional graduation ceremonies until November 2020 (week of Thanksgiving Break).
• On June 4, schools will commemorate graduation through a virtual senior activity paying tribute to the Class of 2020. Each school will provide details and information about the activity to all seniors and their families.
• All senior activities will adhere to the current Safer at Home Order.
• The District has worked with each high school on a schedule for seniors to pick up their cap and gown and other senior memorabilia.
• Based on a recent survey completed by nearly 900 seniors, the District will plan activities and events to celebrate seniors if and when it is safe to do so.
• Diploma pick up will be done at each school site by APPOINTMENT ONLY on June 4 and June 5.
Please monitor your email, school, and district social media accounts and emuhsd.org for updates and information regarding graduation and information for seniors.

I want to thank everyone who brought their best thinking and creative problem-solving in contributing to this decision, especially our senior student leaders who brought the voices of their classmates to the table. I know how important this time of year is and the significance of graduation merits. I also acknowledge this has not been the senior year that our students have been looking forward to in so many ways, both large and small.

To our seniors, I thank you for your sacrifice, resilience, and continued optimism in the face of unprecedented adversity. I remain inspired by you and look forward to celebrating graduation with you.

We are #SeniorStrong!
