Irwindale Regional Center Office Expands Local Access

|

IRWINDALE — The Irwindale Regional Center Office is bringing developmental disability services closer to families across the central San Gabriel Valley. The San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center opened its second location in May at 4900 Rivergrade Road, Suite B120.

The new office aims to improve access for individuals with developmental disabilities and families living near foothill communities. Residents of Irwindale, Baldwin Park and nearby cities may have a shorter trip when meeting regional center staff.

The organization still operates as one regional center, with offices in Irwindale and Pomona. It serves nearly 18,000 clients and has about 600 employees across both locations, according to San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center.

Irwindale Regional Center Office Improves Access

California has 21 regional centers that coordinate services for people with developmental disabilities. The nonprofit agencies contract with the California Department of Developmental Services.

Regional centers assess eligibility and help clients plan, obtain and coordinate services. Each eligible client receives a service coordinator who helps develop an Individual Program Plan based on individual needs and goals.

Services can change as a person moves through different stages of life. Infants and young children may receive evaluations and early intervention. School-age children and their families may need help connecting with education and community resources.

Adults can receive support related to employment, transportation, independent living and residential services. The state also offers the Self-Determination Program, which provides participants more control when selecting certain services and supports. More information is available through the California Department of Developmental Services.

Support During Major Life Transitions

Service coordination can become especially important during major transitions. Families may work with school districts, health care providers and government agencies at the same time.

A service coordinator can help identify available programs and connect families with appropriate resources. Regional centers also provide information, referrals, advocacy, family support and educational opportunities.

The Irwindale Regional Center Office gives families another location for accessing that guidance. The regional center said the expansion is intended to improve accessibility for people living near the foothill areas.

Families should contact the regional center before visiting to confirm appointment details and their assigned staff member’s location. Staff telephone numbers and email addresses remain unchanged between the two offices.

Appointments and information are available at 909-620-7722. The Irwindale office is at 4900 Rivergrade Road, Suite B120. Mail should continue going to 75 Rancho Camino Drive in Pomona.

For San Gabriel Valley families navigating developmental services, the Irwindale location provides another nearby point of contact. Its presence can reduce a practical barrier while connecting residents with staff who coordinate services throughout a person’s life.
