EL MONTE — Mountain View Food Pantry services are helping local families put food on the table as grocery and household costs strain budgets. The Mountain View School District Family Center operates the pantry as an ongoing resource open to the surrounding community.
The Family Center operates the walk-up pantry at 2740 Mountain View Road in El Monte. The district partners with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank to provide food distributions generally twice each month.
Distributions are typically held Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m., or until supplies run out. Residents should confirm current distribution dates with the Family Center before visiting.
Unlike some school-based programs, the pantry is not limited to Mountain View School District students or their families. Community members can also use the service.
Meeting A Community Need
Mountain View School District opened the walk-up pantry in August 2024 as part of its efforts to address food insecurity.
Demand emerged quickly. By the district’s formal ribbon-cutting ceremony in October 2024, nearly 1,000 families had received food since the first distribution on Aug. 22.
The Mountain View Food Pantry received support from several community partners. They included the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis’ office and the City of El Monte.
The pantry also gives participants some choice in selecting available food rather than relying only on prepacked boxes.
District materials have described USDA food selections that include whole-grain pasta, oatmeal, potatoes and canned tomatoes. Visitors are encouraged to bring reusable bags or a cart to carry groceries home.
Support Extends Beyond Food Assistance
The pantry represents one part of the Family Center’s broader effort to connect households with services that support stability and student success.
The center has provided English as a Second Language classes, parent education and family biliteracy programs. Other services have included wellness resources, clothing distributions, dental screenings and assistance for migrant education families and foster youth.
Those programs reflect the district’s effort to address challenges students and families may experience outside school. Access to food, health services and family programs can provide support that reaches into students’ daily lives.
By opening the pantry to the wider community, the district also reaches residents without children enrolled in Mountain View schools.
Mountain View Food Pantry distributions remain an ongoing resource rather than a one-time event. That distinction gives residents another local option when they need food assistance.
The pantry’s early participation also illustrates the level of need in the community. Serving nearly 1,000 families within its first two months demonstrated how quickly households turned to the program.
