South El Monte High School’s championship volleyball and football teams received public recognition Tuesday night for historic 2025 CIF Southern Section title runs.
The El Monte Union High School District Board of Trustees honored student-athletes and coaches during its Jan. 21 meeting, drawing families, classmates, and community members to celebrate two first-ever championships for the campus.
Girls volleyball earned the CIF Southern Section Division 9 title, while boys football captured the Division 14 championship, marking a milestone year for South El Monte High School athletics.
Volleyball Team Celebrated For Historic Title
The Lady Eagles clinched the Division 9 championship on Nov. 8, 2025, defeating Nogales High School in a five-set final that ended 3-2. The win delivered the first CIF Southern Section title in the program’s history.
Team leaders and seniors including Zaira Garcia, Laura Hui, Annett Cervantes, Daniella Ceballos, Daniela Galvan, and Daniella Galvan played key roles throughout the postseason. Coaches credited the group’s chemistry and resilience for carrying them through a demanding playoff schedule.
After the section title, South El Monte advanced to the CIF State Girls Volleyball Division V playoffs. The team defeated Foothill Tech in the opening round before falling to Morro Bay in the next game.
During the board meeting, players reflected on years of steady improvement and credited head coach Kristina Puckett for building a competitive foundation over the past decade.
Football Program Reaches New Heights
The Eagles football team also celebrated a breakthrough season, capturing the CIF Southern Section Division 14 championship with a 14-6 victory over Pioneer High School.
The title marked the first CIF Southern Section football championship in school history. South El Monte reached the finals after decisive playoff wins, including a 45-7 victory over Channel Islands High School and a 13-7 win against Miller High School.
Following the section championship, the Eagles continued into regional competition and faced Santee High School on Dec. 6 as part of the CIF State playoff lineup.
Coaches highlighted disciplined preparation, strong senior leadership, and consistent execution as defining elements of the season. Players spoke about representing South El Monte with pride and setting a new standard for future teams.
District And Community Recognition
Trustees presented certificates of recognition to both teams, applauding their dedication and the positive attention brought to the district. Administrators praised the athletes for balancing academic responsibilities with the demands of championship competition.
Families and supporters filled the meeting room, offering sustained applause as players and coaches were introduced. Several speakers noted the broader impact of the titles, citing increased school spirit and community engagement.
The championships reflect a significant moment for South El Monte High School athletics, signaling continued growth across programs and renewed expectations for success in coming seasons.
