The El Monte Union High School District is mourning the loss of former Superintendent David Richard Sandell, a longtime educator whose leadership helped shape the district for decades. Sandell died peacefully Nov. 24, 2025. He was 89.

District officials announced Sandell’s passing in a statement, noting his deep commitment to public education and his lasting influence on students, staff, and the wider El Monte community. His career spanned several decades and included service as both a school principal and district superintendent.

Sandell first joined the district as principal of El Monte High School, where colleagues recall a steady, student-centered leader with a strong belief in academic opportunity. His work at the campus level laid the foundation for his later appointment as superintendent, a role in which he guided the district through periods of growth and change.

As superintendent, Sandell focused on long-term planning, community engagement, and maintaining stable leadership across district schools. Former colleagues have credited him with fostering trust between district administration, educators, and families during his tenure. His leadership style emphasized collaboration and consistency, values that continued to influence district culture after his retirement.

Even after stepping down as superintendent, Sandell remained closely connected to El Monte Union. The district said he continued serving as an ambassador, representing El Monte Union at community events and supporting district initiatives. His post-retirement work included leading efforts to pass Measure Y, a voter-approved school bond that funded long-term campus improvements and infrastructure upgrades.

District officials described Measure Y as a pivotal step in modernizing facilities and improving learning environments for future generations of students. Sandell’s leadership during the campaign helped secure community support and ensured the bond’s successful passage, according to the district.

“David Sandell dedicated his life to public education and to this community,” the district said in its statement. “The District extends its deepest condolences to the Sandell family and all those whose lives were touched by his leadership, service and legacy.”

A memorial service celebrating Sandell’s life is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Mariners Church, Little Chapel, 5001 Newport Coast Drive in Irvine. Members of the El Monte Union community are invited to attend.

The district extended condolences to Sandell’s family, friends, and all those who worked alongside him over the years. Officials encouraged community members to reflect on his contributions and the role he played in strengthening public education in El Monte.
