Drive Sober Safety Campaign Begins Dec. 12

The Irwindale Police Department will launch its annual Drive Sober Safety Campaign on December 12 as the region enters one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The effort supports a national push to reduce impaired driving and keep families safe during holiday celebrations.

Holiday Enforcement Increases

The Drive Sober Safety Campaign will run through New Year’s Day with added patrols focused on identifying drivers suspected of alcohol or drug impairment. Officers plan to maintain a visible presence on Irwindale roads as part of the federal “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative. The campaign highlights a troubling trend. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show that 1,038 people died in alcohol-related crashes in the United States during December 2023.

Irwindale officers stress that these numbers represent preventable tragedies. The department’s message urges residents to enjoy holiday events while making smart travel plans. Extra enforcement aims to protect families across the San Gabriel Valley, including workers and visitors traveling near major corridors.

Community Message Stays Positive

Sergeant Manny Campos said the goal is simple. He wants every resident to return home safely. Campos encourages drivers to avoid any form of impairment. He noted that alcohol is not the only concern. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products and some chemical substances can also affect driving. The Drive Sober Safety Campaign reminds residents that impairment of any kind puts communities at risk.

Families preparing for holiday gatherings in Baldwin Park, El Monte, Temple City and nearby cities often travel through Irwindale’s commercial and industrial zones. The department’s message reinforces the idea that planning ahead reduces danger for everyone on the road. Safe driving choices support the region’s long-term work toward fewer traffic injuries.

Plan Ahead Before You Drive

The Drive Sober Safety Campaign encourages residents to designate a sober driver, use public transit or rely on rideshare services when drinking is planned. Officers ask drivers to call 9-1-1 if they spot someone who appears to be impaired. Early reports help prevent collisions and support faster emergency response.

The program receives support from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Funding helps departments maintain staffing and outreach during high-risk periods. With holiday events beginning across the Valley, Irwindale police hope that a clear message will guide decision-making: celebrate responsibly and protect the people who share the road.
