Great ShakeOut Strengthens District Safety

by | Nov 4, 2025 | Chalk Talk

Students and staff across the El Monte Union High School District joined millions of Californians on October 16 for the annual Great ShakeOut earthquake drill, a statewide event focused on earthquake preparedness and safety. The Districtwide exercise helped students and employees practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” procedure, a proven method to protect lives during seismic emergencies.

Participation in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill reflects El Monte Union’s continued dedication to keeping campuses safe and ensuring a rapid, coordinated response during a real emergency.

Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill Builds Preparedness

The Great ShakeOut began in 2008 in Southern California as a regional effort to improve earthquake awareness and readiness. Organized by the Southern California Earthquake Center, the event has expanded globally, with more than 70 countries now participating. Each October, millions rehearse safety steps and evaluate their emergency plans to strengthen overall community resilience.

California’s role in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill remains central, as the state’s high seismic activity makes preparation essential. The drill encourages residents, schools, and businesses to take immediate protective actions, review emergency kits, and update communication strategies.

Earthquake Safety Across El Monte High Schools

Earthquake readiness is vital for the San Gabriel Valley, where the Whittier and San Gabriel faults pose potential risks. El Monte Union High School District’s schools in El Monte, South El Monte, Rosemead, and nearby communities participate annually in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill to reinforce safe behavior and improve emergency response.

During this year’s event, all campuses practiced districtwide safety procedures and evacuation plans. Students followed the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” method, then gathered in designated areas for attendance checks and safety reviews.

District Steps to Enhance Earthquake Protection

El Monte Union has invested in structural modernization and safety upgrades to meet California’s seismic standards. Campuses now include reinforced foundations, improved utilities, and upgraded communication systems. Staff members receive regular training in first aid, emergency management, and reunification plans.

Each school maintains stocked emergency kits and active safety teams that coordinate during drills and real emergencies. The District also collaborates with local police, fire, and emergency services to strengthen regional preparedness and community coordination.

Commitment to Student Safety

By participating in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill each year, El Monte Union reinforces its long-term commitment to safety education, facility resilience, and coordinated response planning. The District’s focus on preparation helps protect students, staff, and property while fostering a culture of awareness that extends beyond school grounds.
