Arroyo High Rallies Spirit at Student Assembly

El Monte’s Arroyo High School kicked off the school year with its annual Blue, Black and White rally, an event that brought together students, staff, and athletes for a spirited celebration. Held at B. L. Bergstrom Stadium, the assembly featured performances, games, and recognition of student athletes, marking the first major student body gathering of the year.

Performances Showcase Talent and Spirit

The cheerleading team energized the crowd with its signature “Blue Machine” chant, while the Arroyo Knights band and choir performed under the direction of new band director Aron Campbell. For many, this was the first time hearing the band perform together this year. Students joined in singing the school’s Alma Mater to close the event, adding to the sense of unity and tradition.

“It was one of the band’s first performances with Mr. Campbell, and the students were excited to see all their hard work come together,” yearbook staff noted.

New Sports, Staff, and Clubs Recognized

This year’s rally also highlighted changes across campus, including new sports programs such as girls flag football, boys volleyball, and cheerleading stunt. Varsity fall athletes were introduced and shared their upcoming schedules, with newer teams like girls flag football receiving their first recognition at a schoolwide event.

The assembly also welcomed new staff members, including Assistant Principal Mr. Duong, and promoted new student organizations like the Aerospace, Research Mechanical Sciences (A.R.M.S.) Club, which is drawing interest from students interested in engineering and science.

Teachers Step Into the Spotlight

One of the most anticipated moments came when teachers traded their professional roles for inflatable costumes in a performance designed by teacher Dara Sem. Staff members danced, raced, and competed, bringing laughter and surprise to the stands.

“The idea was pitched by a former teacher, Fressy Gutierrez, about two years ago,” said Sem. “It’s been in the works since then, and it was great to finally bring it to life.”

Students welcomed the change of pace. “I thought it was funny to see them not be teachers and see them messing around with each other,” said senior Madison Hernandez.

A Strong Start to the Year

Beyond entertainment, the rally served as a platform for the Associated Student Body (ASB) to connect with the campus community. Students filled the stands dressed in school colors, cheered on their classmates, and caught Arroyo merchandise tossed into the crowd.

With new sports, staff, and clubs energizing the campus, Arroyo’s annual Blue, Black and White rally set the stage for a year of growth and school pride. The event highlighted not just athletic and artistic talent, but also the close ties between students and staff that define the Arroyo High community.
