Temple City Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

Five seniors at Temple City High School have been named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, placing them among the top one percent of more than 1.3 million students nationwide after the 2024 PSAT/NMSQT. Temple City semifinalists will now compete for a share of nearly $26 million in scholarships awarded to about 6,930 finalists next year.

Scoring in the top one percent nationwide represents a significant achievement. Students took the PSAT/NMSQT last October, and the results highlight Temple City High School’s test-prep efforts. Counselors hosted study sessions, and parents attended information nights to support the process. “We are incredibly proud of our students,” said college counselor James Ramirez. “Their dedication shows the impact of collaboration among teachers, families, and the school community.” Historically, National Merit semifinalists from the district have gone on to enroll at top-tier universities and earn additional merit awards.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced last week that these students scored high enough to qualify as semifinalists, the first step in the competition. To advance, each semifinalist must submit a detailed application this fall, including essays, recommendation letters, and evidence of academic performance. Finalist selection will depend on those materials, confirmation of scores, and a record of strong academic achievement.

These Temple City semifinalists balanced rigorous coursework with extracurricular commitments. One student serves as captain of the cross-country team; another leads the robotics club. Others participate in theatre productions, student government, and community service projects.

To become finalists, semifinalists must maintain an outstanding academic record, earn a confirming SAT score, and secure an endorsement from the school. Finalists will then compete for three types of awards: National Merit scholarships funded by the corporation, corporate-sponsored awards, and college-sponsored scholarships. Winners will be notified in spring 2026.

The recognition of these five seniors highlights Temple City High School’s efforts to prepare students for college and career success. In recent years, the school has expanded Advanced Placement offerings and launched after-school tutoring in STEM subjects. Counselors report rising interest in scholarship programs among underclassmen inspired by current semifinalists.

Families and teachers are now helping students prepare application materials. Orientation sessions hosted by the counseling office will explain the process, deadlines, and interview preparation. Students also plan to highlight volunteer work at local food banks and leadership roles in youth councils, demonstrating both scholarship and character.

The community will follow the semifinalists’ progress as finalists are announced in February 2026. If any student advances, they will represent Temple City on the national stage and may continue to compete for awards at colleges across the country. In the meantime, peers and underclassmen will look to these Temple City semifinalists as examples of what dedication and perseverance can achieve.

Best wishes go to all five students as they complete the finalist application process and continue their academic journeys.
