Two Opportunities for Learning (OFL) Baldwin Park seniors, Atziri Talavera and Autumn Davies, joined business leaders, elected officials, and community members at the Irwindale Chamber of Commerce Legislative Luncheon on July 25. The event, held in Irwindale, featured Congressman Gil Cisneros as keynote speaker and focused on issues impacting San Gabriel Valley industries including insurance, real estate, and economic development.

Thanks to a sponsorship from Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC), both students attended the luncheon, gaining the opportunity to network and participate in civic discussions. Talavera and Davies, who are preparing to graduate next semester, were selected for their leadership and academic achievement.

When Congressman Cisneros visited their table, the students introduced themselves and shared their post-graduation goals. They discussed aspirations ranging from entrepreneurship to public service, and asked for guidance on leadership. Cisneros encouraged them, posed for photos, and recorded a video message with Talavera declaring, “We are fighting for you.”

“It was inspiring to hear Congressman Cisneros speak about the importance of education and opportunity. I felt seen and heard as a student,” Talavera said. Davies added, “Being in that room showed me how many people are working to support students like us. It was an honor to be part of it.”

Mt. SAC’s Role in Student Opportunities

Superintendent Ileana Kiriakos credited Mt. SAC’s sponsorship for creating the opportunity. “Mt. SAC’s sponsorship made it possible for our students to experience firsthand how leaders at every level are working to create pathways for student success,” Kiriakos said.

The luncheon also underscored the growing partnership between Mt. SAC and OFL Baldwin Park. Earlier this year, dual enrollment classes began on the OFL campus, starting with Counseling and expanding this fall to include American Sign Language. Mt. SAC’s support reflects confidence in OFL’s educational model and its students’ potential to contribute to their communities.

Civic Engagement and Community Impact

For both students, the luncheon was their first Chamber event, and they noted how interested local businesses were in hearing from community leaders. They also participated in the question-and-answer session, further engaging with the dialogue on regional priorities.

Congressman Cisneros’s presence resonated with students aspiring toward civic engagement, especially as he has recently spoken out on behalf of local families impacted by immigration enforcement actions. His message at the luncheon emphasized education, community involvement, and using one’s voice to create positive change.
