$1 Million Grant Strengthens Greater El Monte Emergency Care

Greater El Monte Community Hospital will receive $1 million in Measure B funding to sustain its emergency department and protect essential medical services for residents across the San Gabriel Valley. The allocation, announced by Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, is aimed at helping the hospital continue delivering critical care amid rising financial pressures facing local health providers.

Investment strengthens community health access

Supervisor Solis said the Measure B investment underscores the county’s commitment to maintaining life-saving care for families, seniors, and working residents in El Monte, South El Monte, Baldwin Park, and nearby unincorporated communities. The funds will support emergency operations at a time when hospitals countywide are managing increased costs and uncertainty linked to federal policy changes.

“Greater El Monte Community Hospital plays an essential role in delivering care to families, seniors, and working people across our communities,” Solis said in a statement announcing the funding. “This investment is about protecting that care and ensuring the hospital can continue providing life-saving emergency services to those who depend on it most.”

Support comes amid financial challenges

The $1 million allocation stems from a motion introduced by Solis and approved as part of a countywide plan to distribute $20 million in unallocated Measure B funds. In July, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to divide the funds evenly among its five districts to address urgent health care needs.

Local hospitals, including Greater El Monte Community Hospital, have been under growing strain following federal H.R. 1 legislation passed in July 2025. The measure includes nearly $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, raising concerns about long-term impacts on Medi-Cal providers and the patients who rely on them.

According to the Greater San Gabriel Valley Community Health Snapshot 2020, many residents face barriers to timely care because of a shortage of nearby medical providers. Greater El Monte Community Hospital serves as a vital access point for emergency services and hospital-based treatment for thousands of families who might otherwise need to travel far outside the region for urgent care.

Local leadership praises hospital’s role

Hospital officials welcomed the funding as a vital bridge to maintain essential operations. “This funding will help us maintain emergency operations and ensure our community has access to quality, compassionate care close to home,” said Dr. Stanley Toy, Chief Executive Officer of Greater El Monte Community Hospital.

The hospital, located in the heart of South El Monte, has long been recognized for its commitment to community-centered care. Its emergency department serves residents across El Monte, Baldwin Park, West Puente Valley, Avocado Heights, Pellissier Village, and surrounding areas—many of whom depend on local access to emergency and specialized treatment.

Commitment to care continues

Supervisor Solis emphasized that keeping hospitals financially stable is key to protecting the region’s overall health system. “Our hospitals are the backbone of local health care,” Solis said. “We must continue investing in them so that every person, regardless of income, status, or circumstance, can receive care when they need it.”

The county’s motion also designated $1 million in Measure B funding for Adventist Health White Memorial in Montebello. Together, the allocations aim to strengthen safety-net hospitals that serve diverse and often underserved communities.
